History Details For - Benjamin Lincoln

1/19/1733
Benjamin Lincoln began the war as a Lieutenant Colonel of the Massachusetts state militia. In February, 1777, Lincoln was commissioned into the Continental Army as a Major General. Washington then sent Lincoln to help Major General Philip Schuyler against Major General John Burgoyne, specifically to raise and organize the New England militia. Later in 177, he served under Maj. Gen. Horatio Gates, playing a large role in the defeat of British Maj. Gen. John Burgoyne during the Saratoga Campaign. As the story goes, it was Lincoln who accepted British General O'Hara's sword in surrender as the American army's second in command.
