History Details For - Benedict Arnold1/11/1741General Arnold was probably the most tragic figure of the Revolution. If Arnold did not become the traitor that he was, he would have been one of the biggest American heros of the war. His exploits began very early in the war. Some of his best known exploits are:
- he led an army through the Maine wilderness to invade the British stationed in Quebec. This was during the invasion of Canada.
- he commanded a semi-navy at the battle of Valcour Bay
- he rallied a line of troops during a critical point in the Battle of Saratoga.
Then of course there was his treason. Arnold was working on delivering West Point to the British. Should West Poing have fallen into the hands of the British, this would have been disasterous for the Americans. West Point was the critical point in the Hudson River, control of this point by the British would have given them control of the river. If the British controlled this river, all of New England would have been cut off from the rest of the continent. This would have been disasterous for the american cause. Links:
