History Details For - Nathanael Greene

12/29/1741
Not much is known about Greene's early life. Greene was active during most of the Revolution, eventually commanding the southern armies. Greene didn't win all that many battles (if any), but fought General Lord Corwallis in many battles in the southern campaigns in 1779-1781. In these battles Greene's army damaged the British and retreated, eventually stretching Cornwallis' supply lines beyond what they could support. This caused the British to have to retreat from South and North Carolina and withdraw to Yorktown -- where Cornwallis surrendered to Washington. After the war, Greene declined the position of Secretary of War retiring to his estate in Georgia. He died there in 1786 at the age of 44.
