6/28/1776
Charles Lee helped to organize the defense of the city after General Sir Henry Clinton decided to try to take the city. The American strong-hold was a log fort on Sullivan's Island at the north entrance to Charleston harbor. Colomel William Moultrie commanded 413 infantry and 22 artillerymen in the fort.

The British arrived on June 4, 1776 and began to land men on the 9th. An artillery duel between the British fleet and Fort Moultie began on June 28. The British withdrew that night because of greater losses. The British lost 3 ships, 64 killed and 131 wounded. The defending Americans lost 17 dead and 20 wounded.
