History Details For - Charleston II

5/8/1780
General Henry Clinton sent a force of 8500 men from New York to South Carolina. On February 11 this force landed on Johns Island, 30 miles south of Charleston. General Benjamin Lincoln was forming the defenses of the city, building a force of 2650 regulars and 2500 militia behind 3 miles of fortifications.

To the Northeast of Charleston, General Isaac Hugar was posted with 500 men to defend the American lines of communications to the north. Colonel Banastre Tarleton led a British charge against Hugers camp and destroyed it. The British now readied themselves for the final assault of the city. On May 8 Lincoln asked for a truce and surrendered 4 days later.

This was the greatest loss for the Americans -- 5466 total casualties, 89 Continentals killed and 189 wounded, the rest were captured. All of the military stores within Charleston fell into the hands of the British. 3 weeks later, Clinton set sail for New York leaving Cornwallis to conquer the south.
