The siege of Gibraltar lasted essentially the remainder of the war. The British garrison was commanded by General George Eliot. The seige had many battles over the course of the war during which time the Spanish and French fleets under Don Alvarez blockaded the position.
In September of 1782 the Spanish and French built up a tremendous force to try to oust the British. There were 50 ships, 10 floating batteries mounting 154 guns, 40 gunboards formed a formidable attacking force. Duc de Crillon landed 33000 troops and 300 pieces of artillery against the 7000 British defenders. On September 9, the allies began to bombard Gibraltar. One by one the British aank 9 of the 10 floating batteries and boarding and buring the tenth.
Admiral Lord RIchard Howe ran through the blockade to land provisions, ammunition and reinforcements to the garrison. This allowed the British to hold out for the remainder of the war.
