History Details For - Savannah II10/9/1779The French under Comte d'Estaing landed 3500 troops on the Savannah River about 8 miles outside of Savannah. The French were joined by 200 men under General Count Casimir Pulaski and by General Benjamin Lincoln with 600 Continentals and 750 militia. With just over 5000 men, the combined forces set seige against Savannah which was defended by 3200 British and Loyalists under General Augustine Prevost.
The British were well entrenched so the 5 day long bombardment (which began on October 4) had very little effect on the defenders. The assault began on October 9. A the Spring Hill redoubt in the southwest of the city had the fiercest fighting of the war since Bunker Hill. Colonel John Laurens of South Carolina attacked Spring Hill but was eventually beaten back within an hour, suffering 173 dead. The Americans and French lost 244 killed and 584 wounded failing at every point they assaulted. The British casualties totalled 155 killed wounded or missing. Links:
