History Details For - Carrickfergus

4/24/1778
Captain John Paul Jones set sail from Portsmouth NH in November, 1777 to take the war to England. Carrickfergus is on the coast of Northern Ireland. Captain Jones, commanding the warship Ranger, found the British warship Drake. The Ranger commanding 18 guns opened fire on the Drake which had 20 guns. Within 30 minutes, the captain of the Drake and 40 crew members were dead, while Jones lost only 6 men.

Carrickfergus marked the first defeat of a British warship by an American naval vessel. After the battle, Jones set sail for France to organize a fleet for a larger attack on England.
