History Details For - Great Bridge

12/9/1775
This was the first major battle of the American Revolution in the south. Prior to this battle, the revolution was mainly fought in New England and New York. This uprising was very specifically against the royal governor of Virginia. Lord Dunmore, John Murray, reinforced his local British regiment with negro slaves and indentured servants. This enraged the local farmers under Colonel William Woodford who marched against Dunmore and his 1200 men.

600 men under CaptainLeslie headed for the Elizabeth River crossing of Great Bridge to head off the regiment of Virginians. On December 9 the British tried to cross the bridge but were stopped by fire from the Virginians on the other side of the river. After stopping the British advance, the patriots stormed across the bridge routing the British.

American casulaties were 1 wounded while the British lost 60 men either killed or wounded. The Virginians then marched into Norfolk Virginia where Lord Dunmore had been stationed on December 14th. The British evacuated the town onto ships moored in the harbor. As Lord Dunmore made his exit on January 1, 1776 the British shelled the town and burned nearly all of the town.
