History Details For - Oriskany8/6/1777800 men under General Nicholas Herkimer left Fort Dayton to aid Colonel Peter Gansevoort defending Fort Stanwix. On August 6, the militia were ambushed by Mohawk indians under Joseph Brant. Herkimer was mortally wounded in the battle. The Americans were driven back, losing 250 men. The British and indians lost 150. This relief column never made it to relieve the fort.Links:
