History Details For - Germantown

10/4/1777
General Sir William Howe occupied Philadelphia on September 26th. To guard the city, he sent 9000 troops to Germantown, just outside the city. The Continentals called for reinforcements to get back to 8000 regulars and 3000 militia. Washington had his reinforcements by October 4th, when he launched a 4-prong attack against the British. The main assault was in the center, supported by General Nathanael Greene on the left and General John Sullivan on the right. The extreme left and right were commanded by General William Smallwood and General John Armstrong, these wings were supposed to circle around Howe's flanks and close around the British army.

The initial advance in the center drove into Germantown. On the right, 120 British infantrymen barricaded themselved in a stone house owned by Chief Justice Berjamin Chew. THis position held up the American advance. In a foggy, smoky mess, a division of Sullivans men and a division of General Anthony Wayne's men began to fire on each other -- both units paniced and retreated. Next Sullivan's army began to retreat and then Greene.

The entire American army retreated losing 152 killed, 521 wounded and 400 captured. The British lost 520 total casualties. After this battle, the Americans took up winter quarters in Valley Forge, suffering terribly.
