History Details For - Trenton12/26/1776In November 1776, General Washington abandoned New York and retreated southwest across New Jersey. This was after the Continentals lost forts Washington and Lee, both of which guarded the Hudson River. On December 11, Washington and his army crossed the Delaware River into Pennsylvania, the main purpose of this was to protect Philadelphia while the British forces went into winter quarters.
On the night of December 25, General Washington took what remained (and was healthy) of his army and crossed the river into New Jersey, to hit the town of Trenton, 9 miles north of where the Continentals crossed. Washington was hoping to attack the Hessians stationed in Trenton while it was still dark, but the crossing took most of the night. The Americans were still able to surprise the Hessians since they were celebrating Christmas the day before.
The Americans struck with 2400 men, attacking the 1400 Hessians commanded by Colonel Johann Rall. The fighting was mostly in the streets of the town, the Hessian commander was mortally wounded in the battle. In total, the Hessians lost 29 killed and 918 captured. The Continentals lost a total of 5 wounded. Washington brought the prisoners back across the Delaware river and came back to occupy Trenton on December 30th. Links:
