History Details For - Stamp Act10/19/1765This is the first real step in driving the American colonists to declare their independence from Britain. The average American (after the French & Indian War) paid about sixpence a year in taxes to the crown, while the average British citizen paid 25 shillings. The British government had a force of 10,000 men stationed in the colonies after the war for the protection of the Americans from French revenge and Indian "depredation". Because of this , the crown felt that the Americans should assist in paying for this force.
Enter the Stamp Act of 1765 (which was passed on April 19th and to go into effect on November 1). The Act decreed that all manner of legal and other documents were declared to be null and void in America unless bearing stamps of varying denominations which had to be purchased from official distributors. Passports had to bear stamps, as did liquor licenses, playing cards, ships' papers, insurance policies, newspapers, almanacs and pamphlets. Most people in Britain thought that this was fair since this is exactly how much of the tax was raised on the citizens in Britain.
The American colonists saw things a little differently.
