History Details For - Baron Friedrich Adolphus von Riedesel12/28/1737Born in Hesse, Germany, Friedrich Adolphus von Riedesel became an officer in the army of the Duke of Brunswick. In 1776 he was made a major-general and appointed the commander of the German mercenaries sent by the Duke of Brunswick to fight on the British side in the American War of Independence. His troops were stationed, for a time, in Québec. After the war he returned home. In 1787 he was made a lieutenant-general and in 1792 the commandant of the city of Brunswick. Links:
